Understanding Alcohol Addiction

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Alcohol addiction is not an overnight issue, it happens after prolonged periods of intoxication and ends up being used as an excuse to get through the stress of daily life. It is believed in some circles that the cause may be a chemical imbalance in the body of the alcoholic. People who don’t have the tools to deal with their stress in an effective manner may turn to alcohol to find the relief and get though their day. Peer pressure and depression along with a low self esteem boost the addiction and the alcoholic begins to drink more.

If you know someone who can’t stop drinking once he has started, that is a sure sign he may be addicted to alcohol. An addict usually chooses to drink alone and will frequently hide his alcohol addiction. He will begin to develop a physical alcohol addiction to the alcohol as well. An addict will only have one thing on his mind: how, where, and when he will find his next drink. It is no longer done for pleasure but a virtual physical need to keep him functioning properly through the day without withdrawal setting in.

How Does Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Affect a Person?

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

There is another school of thought that the addiction is due to a mental disorder and causes physical dependency. The mental disorder must be treated first in order for any treatment plan to work properly.

One more argument is that the alcoholism and drug addiction is due to chemical imbalance. With this belief, it is thought that the addiction must be treated with some sort of medication after detox has been completed.

Scientific studies support each concept but there are no full answers and the fact remains there are millions of alcoholics and drug addicts still out there. When someone goes through the treatment process, his chances of staying clean can range between 16% and 20%. If we want recovery rates to rise, we have to come up with some sort of treatment that will make this happen.

The last thought on addiction is that the alcoholism and drug addiction problem probably has something to do with the life cycle of addiction, which means there is some trauma suffered at one time or another or a painful experience an addict can’t seem to get through without the use of some sort of chemical.

The Causes of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction

A different school of thought argues that the problem of addiction is a dual one, which comprises a mental and physical dependency on chemicals. The issue is further compounded by a pre-existing mental disorder that has to be treated in the first instance due to the fact that it is the primary cause.

Some people hold a different position, believing that dependency on a drug causes a ‘chemical imbalance’ in the neurological system. Accordingly, it must be treated psychotropic medication once the individual has gone through withdrawal.

The number of theories that exist about addiction and the cause of it shows that none of the scientific research can be deemed definitive. Based of average national figures, treatment for addiction leads to a 16% – 20% recovery rate, which shows that the theories are just that, theories. Accordingly, much more research needs to be undertaken to raise the national recovery rate to make it more impressive.

Out of the many, there is one theory that has proven to be the most accurate, which relates to the cycle of an addiction. The data that comes from the study can be universally applied despite the thought process used to explain the dependency on the substance. The addiction cycle usually commences with some type of issue or discomfort, such as a physical or emotional paint hat the individual finds difficult to deal with.

Addiction: Victim, Problem, Solution?

This is not a disease that cuddling, warm blankets and pity will help! Addicts do, most often respond to kindness and understanding, when it is properly given or very often, administered by a professional care-giver, or another addict, hopefully in Recovery!

Stop giving in to your heart, at least the one that says openly, “I feel so sorry for you!” This is an invitation for disappointment and even worse, enabling. Most likely, you can’t help but feel sorry at times. But, every time you do anything that makes it easier, even temporarily, for an addict to carry on with their disease, you help the severity of the problem increase. Saying “no” is a good thing. Addicts try to avoid people who say “no”. They’re obsessed! They are acting “compulsively” or being true to the nature of addiction! There is a strong possibility that they are experiencing “craving”! Right now, you’re probably just a “resource”! Yeah, I know, “They might not even come around if I do that.” Well, are you going to keep doing the same thing, expecting a different result? There is no middle ground, here, you’re either a part of the solution or you’re part of the problem, period!

No matter what; Don’t give them money!!!

This is rule number one. It’s rule number two. It’s the rule of all rules. If you’re

Causes and Consequences of Addictions

The task of defining addiction has challenged physicians, judges, clergy, addicts, their families, and the general public throughout history. There are as many potential definitions as there are groups with an interest in defining addiction. These definitions emphasize such things as physiological dependence, psychological dependence, family dynamics, behavioral problems, and morality. This list could be expanded at length, and NA could come up with its own definition and add it to the list. Addictions can be physical (of the body), psychological (of the mind), or both. In fact, almost any behavior can be termed an addiction if it becomes the primary focus of a person’s life, and especially if it results in harmful effects to one’s physical health and well-being. The term addiction is most commonly associated with a person’s compulsive and habitual desire to consume a chemical substance, such as alcohol or other drugs. The addict’s life is eventually dominated by the craving. It is estimated that up to 25 percent of the American population displays some form of addictive behavior.
